Most people enjoy sitting in their gardens and even using them to grow their own vegetables.  Unfortunately many of us live in areas where the soil conditions are less than suitable for growing either of these sorts of plants.  Many people’s gardens have just suffered years of abuse that have left the soil compacted down and have become overrun with weeds.  Installing raised garden beds can help to make any garden look great in an easy and cost effective manner.

A raised garden bed is essentially an elevated container that holds soil.  Raised beds offer a lot as they can come in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit any garden as well as different materials.  Another great thing about a raised garden bed is that you can have one that is permanently fixed to the ground using concrete or wood or you can have one that can be moved if necessary.

Whether you are choosing to grow vegetables and herbs or just flowers then a raised bed will be a good solution.  The reason for this is that the soil is more porous as it isn’t likely to be walked over so it lets more water through.  You will see some fantastic results if you’re growing flowers in a bed as they will be up to the same standard as those you get from garden centers or a local flower shop.  If you choose to try growing your own vegetables in a raised bed the soil composition will be a big benefit for you.  The combination of drainage materials, compost and topsoil give vegetables the perfect growing conditions.  It is also easy to control the environment that you are growing your own vegetables in, which is a great advantage.  This allows you to remove weeds as soon as they appear and you can also plant companion herbs and vegetables to control insects.

There are a few simple things that you can do should you decide to install a raised garden bed that will help you to get the best results from your seeds.  You want your raised garden bed to get the most amount of sunshine possible.  For this reason where possible you should point them facing north.  Raised beds can become dried out quickly so you will need to monitor the amount of water in the soil.  You will probably find that you will need to moderately water the bed in the morning and evening.  It is also a good idea to create channels between your rows of vegetables this will help to prevent any areas from flooding during heavy rainfall.

Our Little Tulip Garden

We have tulips all through our yard but we don’t want them where they are so we need to dig them up and move them to a location where they will look better.

Tulips have become so common that we don’t think twice about them, but there was a time when these beautiful bulbs were worth their weight in gold. As long as squirrels don’t ruin your blubs they will bloom perennially. Originally found free growing in the mountains of Persia, Tulips traveled into Europe with the Turks. The can propagate through off-springs, seeds or micro-propagation and come in a variety of types, each with its own characteristics.

Tulips should be planted in the fall. Tulps need a time of rest or dormancy to ensure a beautiful flowering. If you reside in a cold climate you can plant your bulbs in the early autumn. If you live in a warmer or more tmperate part of the country you will want to plant at the end of the fall season. If you live in a region that doesn’t have cold winters, set your bulbs in the refrigerator for eight weeks before planting them in early spring; this allows them to achieve a sufficiently long dormant period. Give your local landscaping business a call for more tips

Tulips are available in early, mid and late blooming varieties and in dozens of beautiful colors. Singles generally have smooth, simple petal structures and are used in formal plantings. Tulips called doubles look very much like peonies. Fringed tulips are almost lace-like and parrot tulips have streaks of various colors along their petals. The enormous selection is likely to keep you happily engaged in picking your spring show for a while. One thing you should keep in mind though is that tulips look best when planted in clusters or 10-20 of the same flower.

Blubs have a wide range of prices, you want to buy the best quality that fits your budget. A good landscape business will be able to point you in a good direction for a nice selection of bulbs. Better quality bulbs will bloom more regularly, withstand disease better and produce healthier and often larger blossoms. Once the buying of the blubs is done the next step in getting your garden ready to accept them for growing.

Hard packed soil is not a friend to tulip blubs, make your soil loose. The can be planted in either a natural or formal pattern. Multiply the width of the bulb, multiply by 3 and you have an appropriate planting depth. This allows you to plants different bulbs together by layering them. Layering bulbs or planting species that flower at different parts of the summer ensures colorful views for larger periods of time.

Natural planting of bulbs involves either scattering them on the area you intend to plant and place them where they fall, or clustering them together in bunches, rather than rows. A formal setting will likely have many of the same flowers placed together in carefully spaced rows and columns. Add compost with the soil where you plan to plant. Dig down to the appropriate depth, scatter some rock phosphorus in the bottom of the hole and place the tulip bulbs into the hole; point upwards. One way to not attract pests is to use rock phosphorus instead of bone meal. Cover the bulbs carefully so as not to tip them over and gently pat the soil into place. That’s it.

If you have a serious problem with squirrels digging up your bulbs you may want to protect them by cutting a piece of chicken wire to match the size of your hole. Curl over the edges of the wire and place it on top of the bulbs before you backfill the hole. While this won’t eliminate all squirrel activity it will significantly reduce their depredations. All the supplies needed for planting and protection should be available at a landscape supply store.

We have had so much rain and wind over the past month that it was destroying the beauty in our yard. The weight of all the water was just too much for most of our peonies so I had to cut a few blooms to keep them from lying on the ground. As it was the wind had already destroyed so many of the gorgeous flowers.

Cut Them And Bring Them In The House

Wilting will naturally occur when you cut flowers.  There are however many things that you can do to sustain their beauty and get the maximum amount of time out of their life.

1.) Make sure the glass vasses you use are clean. If has been used before to hold other flowers then give it a good rinse out as there is likely a build up of bacteria around the edge that you want to get rid of

2.) If you are using your own flowers, pick them either in the early morning or in the evening. This is when the plants temperature is at its lowest and will help sustain the plant later. If can pick them in the early part of the day, the flower will have more nutrients stored within it so this is good option if you haven’t got flower feed to hand

3.) For your own flowers, place them in a bucket of water up to their heads overnight to allow them to soak up as much as possible. This is something that gets done already with purchased flowers so you will not have to repeat the process.

4.) When you cut the flower stems, cut at an angle to expose as much of the inner stem as possible. This will provide a larger surface area that is in contact with water and will mean the flower is able to soak up more.

5.) Place the flowers in maybe a clean crystal vase allowing the water about 3/4 of the way up the stem. Make sure your plant feed contains an acid, a sugar and a biocide. The biocide will take out most of the fungus and bacteria, the acid will promote the taking up of water by the stem and the sugar provides the needed nutrients.

6.) Make sure you change the water every couple of days rather than just top it up. This helps to get rid of lots of the dead plant cells and bacteria in the water and gives the flower a clean supply to drink from

7.) If the base of the stems get dirty or clogged up, take the flowers out and re-cut the stems a little further up.

For the maximum life for you flowers, follow all these tips and enjoy the amazing results

My wife and I just can’t get enough of our flower garden, it brings so much joy just looking at them. Sometimes I find myself just staring out my office window into the backyard as it can be quite beautiful.

But, it really got interesting when our plants’ flower blossoms started attracting butterflies. I even bought a new digital camera so I could catch all the beauty to share on my gardening blogs.

Of course, it helps if you can actually see the flowers in your garden! Usually, that means putting the tall flowers at the back and the shorter plants at the front. But does that rule always hold true?

We offer a couple of suggestions that break the rules.

One of those tips involves planting flowers around rocks but you could also use stepping stones. Our stepping stone molds will give your garden a truly unique look… and give your flowers a background to help them stand out. Read it all here…

How To Turn Your Flower Garden Into A Butterfly Heaven

We like to think that our flower seeds will give your garden all the beauty it needs. With a little attention, they can do even more than that. The flowers can also attract butterflies, bringing additional color to your outdoor areas.

Our zinnias, for example, create nectar that’s a treat for the Silver Checkerspot, a yellow-orange butterfly found in most eastern and central states between May and September. Our purple coneflowers are popular with Common Wood-Nymphs and Monarch, and shasta daisies provide a meal for the Mourning Cloak, a beautiful purple-black butterfly that appears across almost the entire country.

You shouldn’t really need to do anything special to turn your flower garden into a butterfly paradise but a little planning can increase the numbers of butterflies that you attract — and the amount that you enjoy them.

Planting particular types of flowers in large groups, for example, will make them easier for butterflies to spot and give you fluttering clusters instead of migrating individuals that come in ones and twos. Creating areas of light and shade will let the butterflies both warm themselves in the sun and provide cool spots out of the heat. And puddles of water and rotting fruit can also give your butterflies a reason to stick around… provided you don’t mind the smell.

You can also try matching the plant favored by the larvae with the flower preferred by the butterfly. Place sunflowers near zinnias, for example, and you’ll create a nursery for the Silvery Checkerspots, guaranteeing a supply when the caterpillars pupate between May and September.

And finally, you can also plan your garden so that you have a spot to sit in the summer shade while the butterflies enjoy the flowers that surround you — and you enjoy both.

Because of its large number, orchid species almost can not be mentioned exactly. You may be able to mention orchid species you know one by one but I believe that it just small potatoes when compared to the real count of orchid species. That’s why orchid species almost can not be mentioned precisely due to its wide number.

Orchid blooms are really fantastic, and some plants have exclusive color combinations that make them an attractive and desirable complement to any home. Nevertheless, choosing amongst the orchid species could be a tricky decision. There are more than 25,000 species of orchids. In addition, though many ofthese species will not be available in your region, you will still be confronted with choosing amongst a variety of beautiful plants.

Popular Orchid Species

Possibly, the best way to restrict your selections is to watch some of the more popular orchid species. These particular varieties have been developed for their flexibility to a home environment and are relatively easy to care for.

Dendrobiums are at the top of this list. This species of orchids offer a wide variety of colors, from white to purple to yellow. Originally found in most of Asia as well as the Philippines, Australia, New Guinea and Borneo, these plants are in vast demand. Because of their attraction, hobbyists have created hybrids for this orchid species.

Cattleya is another popular orchid species that is naturally found in parts of South America and Asia. The blossoms of this plant are especially attractive. The colors are usually, white, yellow or a deep purple. An interesting aspect of the Cattleya is that it charmingly spreads out, rather than grows in a compact pattern.

The last of the three most popular orchid species is Vanda. It has a very unique look and exotic flowers. The leaves appear from a single stalk with the flowers growing from one of the leaf’s bases. This is very special as the blooms can number anywhere from five to twenty per plant. This species originally made its home in Indonesia, China, the Himalayas, Australia and New Guinea.

Choosing the Right Species of Orchids

While these three species of orchids are both admired and gorgeous, there are literally thousands of varieties in the world. The key to choosing the species that is right for you is reliant on where you live and what type of environment you will be providing the plants. With the rising demand for orchids, and more people becoming orchid enthusiasts, growers are experimenting and developing new hybrids.

Even if the novice seems not difficult to plant some orchid species, they are often hardier to enjoy for the indoor gardener. If you plan to grow some of orchid species, don’t wait any longer. Now is the finest moment to initiate a lifetime hobby of growing these magnificent plants.
