I was out fishing the other day when we drove past a spot our John Deere dealer used to take me fly fishing for big brook trout back when I was a teen. That seems like a lifetime ago.

I grew up on a 120 acre beef farm in central Ontario and spent a lot of time, in my early years, riding around the farm on my dad’s John Deere tractor. It’s where I learned to appreciate the quality of John Deere tractors and farm equipment. They made farm life a heck of a lot easier plus they were a lot of fun while I was growing up.

Learning To Handle A John Deere

Once I was big enough I remember Dad letting me go pretty much everywhere with him on our John Deere tractor. He would let me sit on his lap and would even let me steer. Little did I know he was teaching me at the time, even before my little legs could reach the pedals.

That was many moons ago but I am sure I will never forget the day I was first allowed to drive the tractor all the way to the back of the farm on my own. It was a big day for me and created special memories.

Believe it or not but I used to dream about the day I would be able to drive the John Deere on my own. I even called all my friends that night to tell them I drove our John Deere all by myself and I knew they were jealous.

I came along pretty late in our families life. My older brothers were all grown up and on there own before I was very old.

Chuck, the next oldest to me, had his own construction business. When I was old enough Dad would let me go work with him, where I actually earned money for my work.

Chuck had grown up with John Deere tractors and farm equipment most of his life and went straight to Wayne, our John Deere dealer, when he was ready to buy John Deere construction equipment for his construction business.

I remember Chuck bringing over an John Deere excavator to create a pond at the back of our property so the cattle wouldn’t have to go so far for water. It was great fun to watch him moving all that dirt and rock but sadly I wasn’t able to try it myself. He said it wasn’t safe for me but really I think he was just having too much fun.
