Top 5 Reasons To Grow Your Own

Although many people like the idea of being self sustained and committing to growing your own vegetables, they think that it is a very hard process to carry out.
The reality is that if you can spend a bit of time each day maintaining and looking after your veg then you can achieve great results. You also don’t need a lot of space to be able to do it. Applying for a local council allotment could be one solution and there are a number of space saving raised garden beds available on the market to fit into the smallest of gardens. There are a whole range of different benefits to growing our own vegetables and here are five of the best.
1. Because They Are Tastier - Nothing tastes better than eating fresh, organic vegetables. Before vegetables in a shop or supermarket make it to the shelves they have had to of been picked, gathered and transported. This means that you rarely get to taste them when they are truly fresh and a lot of the flavour is lost.
2. For Peace Of Mind – It is hard for any company to guarantee that no pesticides or other chemicals have been used on the plants and soil the vegetables are grown in. Obviously pesticides are useful for protecting crops from being destroyed by pests and disease but it is unclear as to how much they effect the taste of your food. You will gain peace of mind from growing your own organic vegetables because you know what you have used on the soil and plants.
3. To Improve Your Children’s Diet – Getting children to eat their greens can be a nightmare sometimes. It is a great idea to get your children involved in growing fruit and vegetables as it helps them learn and also will get them more motivated to try the different things they have helped to grow. Lets face it, anything that can help to prevent your children from becoming salad dodgers has to be worth trying.
4. For The Health Benefits – If you want to live a healthy lifestyle then eating five portions of fruit and vegetables every day will help you to achieve this. If you want to eat more fruit and vegetables then growing your own will encourage you to do so. Not only this but spending time in the garden preparing the soil and maintaining everything you are growing is good exercise.
5. To Save Money – Planting your own vegetables will help you to save money on your weekly grocery shopping. Supermarkets tend to have special offers on packs of carrots and other veg, which often means you buy more than you need. You will often find yourself throwing away veg that has gone off but with your own veg you will end up just using what you will need avoiding wasteful spending.
