Our Best Home Gardening Tip For Beginners – Do Something NOW
The best home gardening tip I can offer to beginners would be to go natural and stay with organic gardening on what ever level you start gardening.
Always think about what we are doing for our kids and grand kids future. But most importantly start growing something.
Tip #1 – Get A Garden Started – Jenny and I went for many years without a garden because we were waiting until we had a bigger property. That was a mistake because we missed more than 15 years of potential gardening fun.
So, don’t let the fact that you live in a spot that has little to no space. Instead think about using containers. Yes, container gardening is a great way for home gardening beginners to enjoy a bit of gardening.
Grow Tomatoes in Containers – We started with tomatoes in a few pots but you can grow so many things in posts. Of course Jenny was planting petunias her favorite plant of all time I think.
Herbs Taste Great And Are Easy To Grow – Don’t forget to give growing herbs for the kitchen. You can grow them right on your windowsill, just be sure you have enough light for them. Window boxes make another space saver for growing flowers and herbs.
I was the one with the green thumb in our relationship but that was mostly because Jenny was just nervous to have plants die. She of course needed to plant something before it could die, right.
I had my own little flower garden growing right in our living room for years before we ever had room to grow outdoors.
So don’t be shy about trying to grow your own little home garden. It’s a great feeling and the experience will make you want to grow more.
Tip #2 -Light, Water And Good Dirt – Really it doesn’t take much to grow things, just a few pots, some healthy dirt, light and water and you can have things growing right away.
I started my herb garden in one big pot. I just put some stones in the bottom to help keep it drained. Most plants won’t do well if the roots are constantly sitting in water, so drainage is important.
I bought a bag of soil and some herb seeds.
I started with four herbs, so I just used my finger to mark a cross in the dirt, sectioning it off into four sections. It was that easy.
I sprinkled the herb seeds in each section and covered them with a thin layer of soil, about 1/4 inch.
I took popsicle sticks and wrote the herbs in each section so I would know what they were when they came up.
I watered them when the soil was starting to dry.
Note: I stick my finger in the dirt up to the first knuckle and if the soil is drying at that depth I add water. Remember we don’t want to drown them.
I kept them in a window that gets sun most of the day.
NOTE: Once I had the seeds planted I put plastic over the pot to help the moisture from evaporation so the seeds would germinate easier.
Each seed package will have the number of days needed to germinated and the time required to mature.
Home gardening is fun and rewarding, even for beginners.
