Summer’s Gone And It’s Time To Plan Next Year’s Vegetable Garden

Well summer’s gone here in New Brunswick and the temperatures at night are dropping fast. It was only 4C when I got up this morning.
So, our backyard garden has had it for this year. The leaves are all pretty much dead or dying so I harvested what was left and pulled the rest out for the compost bin.
We got quite a few home gardening tips from friends and online reader and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts as we learned so much already, giving us our best vegetable garden yet.
Of course we have only been vegetable gardening for two years so it’s still very much a learning process.
Last year I had planned to triple the size of our vegetable garden but that didn’t get done. I am determined to get that task accomplished between now and next year’s planting. I started today.

Our little 4×16 foot vegetable garden
Next I started digging up the lawn to make our vegetable garden wider. We are aiming to increase it from 4×16 foot to at least 12×16 foot this year and if that works well we will make it 16×16 next fall.
I don’t have a lot of energy but a little each day and I will be done in a week or two. That way I can concentrate of other aspects of our vegetable garden.
Another thing we are planning for next year that will help us keep our veggie garden more orderly is to put in a series of stakes to help things grow vertically instead of sprawling and cluttering the garden which tends to make it hard for the plants to grow as much as they could if they got more direct sunlight.
