Off To The Garden Supply Store For Tools And Shovels

Once Jenny and I were able to buy our home we finally had enough yard space for both flowers gardens and even a vegetable garden.
That’s when we made our first trip to MacArthur’s Nursery here in Moncton for some much needed garden supplies and some garden tools to make gardening easier.
After our first visit we fell in love with MacArthur’s Nursery and think you will to so take the time to visit them.
MacArthur’s Nursery
232 McLaughlin Dr.
Moncton, New Brunswick
There were already two raised flower beds so Jenny of course wanted to start with petunias as they are her most favourite flower and I wanted to start a strawberry patch and to grow some tomatoes and peppers.
We had no garden supplies at all. The only thing we had for a shovel was an old rusty long handled square mouth shovel that might be able to scrap a side walk clean after a snow storm but that was it. So we were in need of garden supplies and tools.
Off To MacArthur’s Nursery For Garden Supplies
We waited until Saturday so we could start the day with a trip to our favourite breakfast spot here in Moncton, Hynes restaurant.
The half hour walk to MacArthur’s Nursery Moncton was the perfect thing to help get breakfast digesting. I remember it was extremely hot by the time we got there and it was only about 9:30.
We had a list of things to pick up but today I will just talk about a few things. We needed a lot of stuff but first we needed shovels so we could start digging.
We also bought some top soil, peatmoss, mulch, containers and some Petunias and the vegetables I wanted.
When we started looking for shovels to use around the yard and in the garden we found there was more than just one or two choices. We want to buy shovels that will last a long time.
It was important to have a trowel to dig the holes for Jenny’s flowers and my veggies so that’s where we started looking.
This garden Trowel is quite durable so it can stand up to being dropped and tossed around a bit.
The handle is sturdy and fits nicely in the palm of my hand without hurting my hands at all, even when I’m not wearing my garden gloves.
It is also balanced just right to reduce the strain on my wrist for effortless and stress free planting.
This particular trowel has a large scoop shovel and is constructed from solid stainless steel with a wood ash handle and leather hang strap.
Now we had a couple of trowels but the raised beds were a mess and needed to be completely reworked and needed top soil and peatmoss to help it along. That was going to require more than that rusty square mouth shovel we found in the garage.
As a kid growing up on a farm I used a shovel just like this to dig hundreds and hundreds of fence post holes. Never could break it as much as I tried. Don’t tell Dad I said that.
This round-point shovel is a classic garden tool designed for digging, lifting and throwing, and the materials are updated with eco-friendly steel and wood.
- Eucalyptus handle was cut from reforested areas.
- Double bolted solid joint socket
- Shovel head is boron alloy steel that’s made with a process that uses water instead of chemicals
- Sustainable Materials
Next we needed a spade for a variety of things like transplanting shrubs and trees to different locations in our yard.
We knew we needed a spade that was easy on the hands as our hands aren’t getting any stronger these days.
This spade has four times more gripping area than a regular T-handled garden tool. Plus it has a non-slip thermoplastic grip.
We don’t want to be buying the same things over again so we tend to by quality and this spade has a resin-encased steel shaft and never-rust stainless steel head ensures that this garden tool stands up to a lifetime of use. Maybe we will will it to our son.
Then it was back home so we could start our first garden.

My favorite gardening tool for planting 4″ pot material is my small pic with a flat blade on one end. This tool allows me to dig the hole I need and if I need to remove a weed or small tree I have the tool I need in my hand already.
