squarefootgardenI am kind of proud of myself, even if I didn’t get all the lines straight. So far this year I have done more than I did in the last two years, and summer isn’t even here quite yet.

It did take me longer than I expected getting all the planting done but I didn’t want to lose our first garden to a late frost so we waited until after the full moon.

I dug up two 4 foot square gardens with a 4 foot square patch of grass between them, but it looked goofy so I dug up the square of grass and increase the size of our square foot garden. It is now one long rectangle 12 feet by 4 feet. I like that a lot more.

So, what’s in your garden?

I’m glad you asked. We just picked some things we like and planted them. We have many more things we like but we are starting small this year. What we learn through the summer and harvest will help us to do better next summer. Maybe even go bigger, double the size.

Oh yeah, what we planted…

Sweet Corn

sweet-cornI wasn’t sure how much corn I should go with so I just put in two 4 foot rows. I remember as a kid on the farm we had about 6 rows that were about 20 or 30 feet long. They had a lot of mouths to feed, we have 3.

The three of us love fresh corn but seldom have it.

For me it brings back one of the good childhood memories. As a family get together we would have corn on the cob eating contests. I never lost.

Green and Yellow Beans

green-beans I remember as a kid I would walk, well sneak, through our garden and eat things, especially beans and peas.

I don’t think we can go wrong with beans. I can eat them raw as fast as they can grow but I also love them steamed with a bit of butter and salt. Mmmmm

Swiss Chard

swiss-chard I grew up being forced to eat greens and I never liked them at all, so fo that reason I didn’t even bother trying them again as an adult. Well until I married Jenny.

This will be knew for me. I have never eaten Swiss Chard in all my 56 years. Now Jenny on the other hand likes them so I will give them a go myself in a month or two.

A Few Types of Onions

We eat onions every single day. I think it would be a boring day without onions in something. We always have the same type of onion so planting a variety will give us some of the onions we don’t usually buy.

Zuchinni, Mmmm

zuchinni-plantWhen zuchinni is done properly and not over cooked in any way it rocks. And then there’s Zuchinni bread. I could eat the whole thing myself.

Hopefully the Zuchinni I planted, twice, survives, thrives and makes us many little babies. I planted it in our little garden and once we thought about it we knew it was going to take over, so I moved it to a new location.

Beet, I Love Beets

Beets go way back for me. I think I was 8 years old before I had my first beet. That was when I moved to the farm and experienced a lot of food I had never had.

Potatoes in Containers

Beets and potatoes would have to be my top 2 veggies, and I love potatoes with everything.

I didn’t have much room left in our little New Brunswick backyard garden so I planted the potatoes in big containers. I’m really curious to see if they will gain any size. If not we love baby potatoes.
