Patio FurnitureDuring these trying economic times, the need to escape from the trials of daily life becomes more and more important. When the weather is cold and miserable, a nice escape might be a vacation to warmer climate or a nice weekend spent watching movies by a fire and sipping hot cocoa. Once the warmer weather arrives however, the back yard or front porch is all the perfect respite. Spring time means that it’s time to uncover the patio furniture, dust off the grill and bask in the glorious sunshine! If your home doesn’t already have a back deck or patio, what are your solutions? Well, you could have one professionally installed in your backyard, however if you’re looking to stay within a certain budget this might not be the best option. If you don’t trust your own skills, make sure you ask for quotes from several companies and select the best one that you can afford. Don’t just choose the first one that you find in the phone book. If you are a little bit more adventurous, planning your own patio is viable and affordable option! Here are some tips!

Building the Patio from the Ground Up:

Building your own brick, flagstone or concrete patio is not as difficult as you might think. Major chain stores like Lowes or Home Depot are great resources, both online and in store and offer you both supplies and helpful tips. It’s a good idea to have a basic design in mind before building yourself a patio. Whether you opt for a traditional red-brick patio or one made from interlocking concrete pavers, a classic, stylish and low maintenance patio is perfectly attainable. Experts warn that with those colored concrete pavers, that colors fade with time, whereas with clay bricks, the color never fades.

Furnishing Your Patio:

Patio furniture is a necessary part of any patio. Having the right patio furniture makes your patio ideal for both entertaining guests and relaxing with the family. For both of these reasons, it’s absolutely essential that your patio furniture is comfortable. You’ll need a table and anywhere from 4 to 6 chairs. While chaise lounges and benches are nice touches, they aren’t completely necessary. Picking up used outdoor furniture is a great option if you’re trying to keep on a budget. You could maybe purchase a new table and then mix and match some used chairs.

If you plan on using your patio space for primarily entertaining, you might want to get a couple of extra chairs or perhaps some sort of outdoor bench. You might want to consider a patio umbrella as well. A patio umbrella will make your outdoor space useable during the elements and it will protect your furniture as well. Investing in some inexpensive vinyl or waterproof canvas furniture covers might be a good idea as well. If you want to go the extreme budget-route, you can just pick up some plastic tarp and call it a day.

Accentuating Your Patio

Accent your newly created space by installing some outdoor solar-powered patio lights. Outdoor lighting provides both extra security as well as aesthetic appeal. Purchase a couple of outdoor rugs and maybe a small stone sculpture or fountain and you’ve created a little outdoor sanctuary perfect for both relaxing moments with a book and outdoor garden parties with friends!
