Jenny Is Glad And So Are Her Glads

happy-gladsNow that’s a pretty Glad, isn’t it?

Jenny made a smart move just in time to save her gladiolus from the latest tropical storm.

The rain came down so hard for so long I am sure they would have been pounded right back into the dirt but this time.

How did she save her glads? Well she’s smart and decided that if the cages we use for tomatoes and peonies worked to keep those top heavy plants from toppling over it should work for the glads and it did.

I am not entirely sure why our gladiolus why they were leaning so much but I think it’s because they only get the late afternoon sun and just grew towards it.

If we had them where they got sun all day they may have grown much straighter. We will see next year when we have moved to a better spot.

We are learning new things all the time which will make next year even more productive and fun.

Spring is here, Summer is coming.  Now we welcome  chirping birds, picnics, and strawberries!  Strawberries are an all time favorite sweet fruit, and it’s so easy to grow your own delicious red fruit right in your backyard.  There are so many strawberry pots you can shop from, so the days of rabbits taking over your hard work are done.

Strawberry planters give a large number of conveniences for gardeners, they also supply ease for the not-so-green thumb.  A gardening strawberry planter comes in many different shapes and sizes, all the from terra cotta strawberry planters, to hanging strawberry planters (the Topsy Turvy strawberry planter is an excellent example of this) so it’s important to watch these ideas before buying just any old strawberry planter.

Terra Cotta Strawberry Jar Planter – 1 Gallon

Terra Cotta Strawberry Jar Planter - 1 GallonWhen finding the strawberry planter that will fit your needs, you must make sure the planter will fit in the space you have designated for it.  You will be unhappy if you buy a strawberry planter that does not fit in your desired destination.  Before buying a planter, decide what size will suit your needs, and where your planter will “live”.  An example of a small and petite planter is the eggling, and could be kept just outside your patio, or the a larger example would be the strawberry barrel, and could be kept within the boundaries of your garden.

Beside size, you can also chose from colors and shapes.  Of course, if you are looking for a terra cotta strawberry planter, your choices are kind of limited in the color arena, but you may have a bit more leverage in the shape arena.  The playful birds planter is green ceramic, and shapped like an hour glass, and the Topsy Turvy strawberry planter is only a hanging strawberry planter that provides not as much style, but incredible convenience.

The most important key about chosing a strawberry planter is making sure it performs it’s job effectively- and that is to keep the strawberries off of the ground and away from bugs and other animals that will reek havoc on your sweet treats.

Vertical Garden Backyard ShedThe oldest profession in the world is farming, next to hunting of course. People have been farming and gardening for thousands of years. It’s actually what allowed people to stop moving around to survive by following their prey.

Through all those years, people have honed, even perfected, methods for cultivating the land and bringing plants to life. For millions of people, gardening is just a hobby anymore, but it’s still a useful hobby, providing food that is much cheaper than food bought at the grocery store. If you are willing to invest the time into learning how to practice vegetable gardening, then you can acquire one of the most rewarding hobbies in all of history.

From Seed to Food

There are so many different types of vegetable gardening around that it can be difficult to make a decision about which one you would like to pick up as your own. Do you want to practice indoor vegetable gardening? The French style is extremely popular, yielding more vegetables per area than any other. Of course, vegetable gardening encompasses many more types than can be listed here, each with their own distinct take on things.

Once you make important decisions concerning what types of plants you want to grow, the size of your garden that you are willing to maintain, and how long each type of plant will take to grow into fruition, you will be ready for preparation of the soil. This step of vegetable gardening is ultimately important to the growth of vegetation. By mixing in manure, compost, or other fertilizers into soil, you can give plants all of the nutrition that they need to grow large and healthy, producing some of the most amazingly delicious vegetables that you can imagine.

As your vegetables progress, you’ll need to keep them watered. Expect to give them about an inch of water per week as they grow. Any less can produce dry rot in the plants, ruining them. Any more can make them rotten. Making sure that they receive the proper amount of water each week is perhaps more integral to vegetable gardening that soil preparation, but the first step shouldn’t be neglected by any means.

If you decide to pick up indoor gardening, then consider building a greenhouse in your backyard to allow vegetables and other fruits to grow year round instead of in your home. A greenhouse allows the sun’s natural rays to shine through so that you don’t need to invest in specialized gardening lights, and it keeps your garden temperate all the time. There are many different ways to go about vegetable gardening. No method is inherently more effective, but they all give you great food at a fraction of the price of food bought from grocery stores.

Don’t forget you’ll need a garden sheds to store all your tools, fertilizer and other handy things in.

My Tiny Tim Tomatoes Growing Tips

Growing Tiny Tim Tomatoes in Our Strawberry Patch

tin-tim-tomatoes

We have been enjoying our Tiny Tim tomatoes. I can’t believe how little some of these tasty tomatoes can be. I picked one while working in the yard yesterday and it was smaller than a pea but it certainly packed a mouth full of flavour.

I had a stir fry for lunch and added a hand full of my Tiny Tim tomatoes to the stir fry.

Tiny Tim Growing Tip

Give your Tiny Tim’s a little bit of elbow room.

Looking back to the size they were when I transplanted them our Tiny Tim’s only grew about an extra 3-4 inches. That’s because they had to fight for room among our strawberries. So a little more space would have given them a much better chance to grow.

We have a raised bed that I planted strawberries in last year. The strawberries were only taking up a little more than half the space so I decided to plant four Tiny Tim tomato plants.

tiny-tim-and-strawberriesThey started out fine but were quickly overtaken by strawberry runners.

I should have transplanted the four tomato plants to the main garden but thought they might do alrights so I left them.

The goal was to have this patch all strawberries for next year as they were producing a full two weeks before any other strawberries around. The tomatoes were going to have to fit to survive.

I am actually surprised we have as many tomatoes from these four plants. I expected they would just not grow and maybe even shrivel up and die but they hung in there and produced hundreds of little tomatoes. Just the perfect size to pop in your mouth on the go.

Note: We did not use any pesticides or growing products and we still had a great crop of Tiny Tim’s. They seem to be quite hardy but I will still be planting them in our main garden next year as this bed will be all strawberries by next year.
