Koi are the beautiful Japanese fish that have been around for centuries. They are graceful creatures that live in ponds and other water formations and are highly prized for their size and colors.  There are any varieties of Koi and many of these grow up to more than a meter long and live up to several decades.

Some people build their own koi ponds and fountains to suit their preferences while others employ the help of experts in making their koi ponds and fountains. The best thing to do if to study the fish first and their habitats and preferences before embarking on a do it yourself dilemma that can be left hanging or could cost you some money just because of your spur of the moment decision. Koi are sensitive fish that need care and attention so make sure you have the time to do this. Koi ponds and fountains will also need care and attention.

Building Koi Ponds and Fountains

The first thing to do when thinking of building koi ponds and fountains is to look for the right location. You must remember that koi do not like direct sunlight and ponds under direct sunlight also gather more moss. This competes with the koi for oxygen in the water so it is better to have a shady area for the pond or to put water lilies with big leaves floating on the water to ensure shade.

You must also consider a water filter unit and a good aeration unit for the pond. Man made ponds and pools need to be aerated artificially to sustain the fish. Koi ponds and fountains need a good water pump to keep the water moving sufficiently enough to have no stagnant water.

One thing to keep in mind when building Koi ponds and fountains is that Koi can grow rather large and you must give a great margin for their growth especially if you intend to keep them for a long time. Each Koi can grow up to a meter long and live up to more than 50 years.

Regularly check the chlorine of the water in the pond since this is dangerous to fish and so are other chemicals and elements in the water. Koi ponds and fountains are very attractive to fishing birds so it is best to make the pond a little deeper than what wading birds can stand up in. Herons and egrets can eat a lot of koi in one sitting so it is best to safeguard from them.

How to Pick a Garden Shed

Do you enjoy working in your garden, but want a place to store those tools and pot those plants? With a garden shed, you don’t have to go back and forth to the basement or garage. You are also more likely to take better care of your tools. No matter what purpose your garden shed is being used for the following details will help you make an informed decision.

1. Materials

Selecting your garden shed material is significant and can be affected by the area you live in. Large Garden Sheds can be assembled using different materials like wood, metal and pvc.

Wooden garden sheds have a environmentally friendly feel that blends in well with your garden and surrounds. However they need frequent maintenance like periodically re-staining or sealing the wood. Despite the durability of wood, over time it can rot, split, warp or become susceptible to mold and mildew, and can be vulnerable to termites – so wood garden sheds ought be treated for protection.

Another option is metal garden sheds. These normally arrive in pre-fab sheets and are more long-lasting and cheaper than wood. But they don’t look as natural as wood and can make the yard look a little dull. Plastic garden shed kits utilizing heavy molded plastics such as PVC and polyethylene are less costly than sheet metal garden sheds.

Plastic sheds are not susceptible to termite and wood-boring insect damage, and are just about maintenance-free. They can also come in several colours and styles to accommodate your present architecture. Plastic garden sheds are highly durable and very low maintenance.

2. Function

Before you go out and buy your garden shed you need to know what you are going to use it for. Will you use it for potting seedlings? Or simply as storage? Would you preferably use your garden shed as a workshop or a potting area? If you are considering using it as some form of potting area, you could consider using it as what is known as a potting shed. These are small structures that are the perfect size for potting up hundreds of delicate seedlings.

Consider about what materials or functions you’ll need from your garden shed. Will you need big bins to store compost, potting soil, mulch, and other bulky garden materials? Shelves that hold pots and indoor potting workbenches give you an easy place to re-pot your transplants even when it’s raining outside. A small, outdoor storage garden shed or potting shed can be a big plus.

Ensure you’ve enough space to work in. If you’ve to move out a lawn mower, garden cart, and other tools before you can work at your potting bench or screen your compost, your garden shed won’t be as effective as you had desired. Some gardeners choose a built-in potting bench, whilst others prefer a wheeled bench so they can work outdoors in good weather and indoors when it rains.

3. Design

You typically have three choices when it comes to building the garden shed. You are able to have it delivered pre-assembled, get a pre-fab kit where partial assembly is involved, or build it yourself. It all depends on your budget and your skills.

The easiest, least costly sheds are available in kit form. The assortment of sizes, shapes, styles and designs is virtually endless, ranging from a simple, small structure for keeping your gardening tools dry, to a back yard barn large enough to house a large lawn tractor, all the family’s bicycles, boating gear, and still allow enough room for other tools.

If you’re tight on space the garden hutch is good for small spaces for outdoor storage. If you’re only seeking a place to store tools an outside cupboard, in kit form perhaps all that’s necessary.
If you would like to go the entire distance, additional contingents such as barn-style doors, cedar shingles, shutters, windows and window boxes add style and charm.

Many garden sheds are modular to allow for easy extensions, peg-boards, shelving, attic-storage, windows, skylights, and other accessories to be added later.

Make sure any windows and doors you select are lockable. Also check that any doors or windows are placed to accommodate the situation where you want to put the garden shed. As you can now tell their are many finer details you need to know before you make your garden shed purchase. If you stick to these simple steps, that choice ought to become a good deal simpler, and most importantly you should have a garden sheds which you enjoy for numerous years to come.

Vegetable Garden Design

Having a vegetable garden is a great asset to your live, with the right vegetable garden design and the right soil you can grow your own healthy and delicious vegetables for your self and your family. But do you need to base your vegetable garden design on what kind of soil you have?

Before you start planning and creating your first vegetable garden design you need to make sure what kind of soil you have.

For a Successful Vegetable Garden Design You Need The Right Soil

To grow vegetables you need good soil, you can define soil in roughly three types. The first soil is also the best soil to grow most vegetables in and is called loam. This type is humus rich, dark, crumbly and soft. It holds water but it also allows for good drainage. This type is an organic matter build up from all kind of living plants, fungus and other living things that have died, decomposed and have returned to the ground. It is also very easy to dig. In this type of soil your veggies will grow like crazy. You don’t need to enhance this type of soil so you can start making that vegetable garden design today.

The next type of garden dirt is clay, this is not as rich as loam and needs a bit of work. Clay consists of very tiny particles and these stick together what causes real poor drainage. Enhancing the clay can be done by mixing it with bone meal, sand, peat moss and other soil nutrients. Mixed together makes the clay suitable for vegetable garden design.

The opposite of clay is sand because the structure is loose and has much larger partials. This means the dirt is dry and poor, but with some work and adding some soil nutrients, you can make it definitely good enough to start with your vegetable garden design.

Your garden is probably a combination of the these three basic types. There are kits you can buy that test the dirt and it tells you what to add to enhance. If you need some more advice before you start with your vegetable garden design you can also ask your local nurseryman.

Prepare the ground for your vegetable garden design

Whatever soil you have you will only grow good vegetables and fruits if it is  properly prepared. autumn or early winter are the best seasons to do this. You need to make sure that the soil is thoroughly spaded and turned to about two spades deep. You can work some (organic) fertilizer in to the ground and during winter the moisture can properly sink in. This will improve the condition of the soil tremendously.

During winter you can start drawing your vegetable garden design and add in all the vegetables and fruits you want to grow. You can look in some books and online instead of digging in the ground and gain some real knowledge about the growing methods and the soil type the many different vegetables need to be very productive.
If you add this knowledge to your vegetable garden design you will have a great garden filled with all kind of vegetables.

Essential Garden Pond Equipment

Lining a Pond

One of the most crucial aspects of constructing your pond is ensuring that you have enough pond lining. Having too little pond liner will mean a sudden rethink in the size of your pond or, worse still, will give you a pond is that is only watertight some of the time.

When measuring your pond you need to consider not just the length and width that you pond will take on the ground, but also the depth of the pond into the ground i.e. you need to know the pond’s volume.

A good rule of thumb is to measure your pond and then add a couple of feet to both measurements. This will allow your rubber pond liner to sit slightly proud of your hole in the ground ensuring that your pond is fully watertight and that your pond water does not seep away.

Pond Filtration

Another essential part of building a pond is a good filtration system. If you look for pond filters on the net you will find a good selection to choose from.

But what is it you need out of a filtration system? To achieve an efficient biological surface you need to ensure the water that enters the filtration is rich in oxygen. This helps the friendly bacteria to oxidise the waste products through the nitrogen cycle. This is called aerobic filtration. Filter systems must fulfil the following criteria:

  • The filter volume should be at minimal 10% of the ponds volume.
  • You should be aiming to turn over at least half the ponds volume once per hour.
  • The filter should have several chambers which can be which can be kept separate and emptied individually when cleaning. And a vortex should be included.
  • The biological surface area should be at least one square metre per ten cubic metres of pond water.
  • An ultra violet clarifier should be installed to eliminate single celled algae, which causes green water.

There are two main types of filtration. The first type of filter is where the water is removed from the pond via a bottom drain and is called a gravity feed. Gravity then forces it through the filter which is sited buried in the ground close to your pond so that the water level in both your filtration and pond are the same. The water is then returned to the pond via a dry sited pond pump through an outlet in the side wall of the pond below the waterline. Because the biological surfaces will have depleted the oxygen during oxidisation of the waste products it is important at this stage to use a venturi on the outlet to oxygenate the returned water.

The second main filtration type and probably the more familiar is a pressurised feed filter. This involves an internal solid handling pump at the deepest part of the pond pumping water through a flexible pipe up to the filter which is sited above the surface level of the pond, which allows the water to return by the forces of gravity.

Water Pumps

Without a good pond pump, a water garden is at the mercy of bacteria, lack of oxygen, and the settling of dirt and debris. In circulating and oxygenating water continuouslyd a dependable pond pump can do wonders for maintaining a healthy environment and balanced ecosystem in your garden pond. The water pump also plays an important role in safety by helping to prevent unwanted pests from breeding and infesting the area. You can find a wide variety of pond pumps to fit every small pond application from good aquatic and water garden retailers.

If you are serious about having a garden pond whether its for wild life or koi, have a look round for pond and aquatics retailers that not only sell you the product but also provide good advice and after sales assistance.
